Other living philosophers of note

Daniel C. Dennett

Daniel Dennett is my other favorite philosopher. However when it comes to consciousness Dan Dennett and David Chalmers appear as arch rivals. His work on the evolution of consciousness has been especially influential. He is the Distinguished Arts and Sciences Professor, Professor of Philosophy, and Director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University. He works include Darwin's Dangerous Idea (Simon &Schuster, 1995), Brainstorms (1978), Elbow Room (1984), The Intentional Stance (1987), Consciousness Explained (1991), Darwin's Dangerous Idea (1995), and Kinds of Minds (1996) among others.
Roger Penrose

I like Penrose mostly as a Physicist. Although I do not believe in his theory of Roger Penrose has written The Emperor's New Mind : Concerning Computers, Minds, and the Laws of Physics , Shadows of the Mind : A Search for the Missing Science of Consciousness , The Large, the Small and the Human Mind among others. He is also famous for his debates with Stephan Hawkings.
Thomas Nagel

Thomas Nagel is the author of now historical paper "What is it like to be a Bat?", one of my all time favorite papers He is currently a Professor at NYU. He is the author of The Possibility of Altruism (Oxford, 1970, reprinted Princeton, 1978), Mortal Questions (Cambridge, 1979), The View From Nowhere (Oxford, 1986), What Does It All Mean? (Oxford, 1987), Equality and Partiality (Oxford, 1991), Other Minds (Oxford, 1995), and The Last Word (Oxford, 1997).
